General

EmergConnect is a mobile platform that allows you to start triage, and registration online on your mobile device before arriving at, or in the emergency room before giving you a predication of how long you’re going to wait to see a doctor. EmergConnect may or may not be available for at-home use based on the hospital you choose.
You should use EmergConnect for non-life threatening symptoms. Depending on your hospital network, you can use EmergConnect in-hospital or at home. IMPORTANT: EmergConnect is currently only available for in-hospital use.
Do not use EmergConnect for potentially life threatening symptoms. These include: Unconsciousness, severe chest pain, heart palpitations, labour or ruptured membranes, neck stiffness/ fainting, inability to walk, trouble seeing or speaking, shortness of breath or dizziness, choking, sudden weakness or numbness.

EmergConnect is a small mobile app that you can download from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
EmergConnect is currently available for users without life threatening symptoms, over the age of 18 with a valid Ontario Health Card (OHIP) number.
EmergConnect speeds up the triage and registration processes while giving you a prediction of your individualized wait time.
After using EmergConnect you will get an individualized prediction of your wait time. You will still be seen by a triage nurse for a shortened triage process to complete triage and verify all of your information.
EmergConnect is an online triage step prior to shortened nurse triage. Triage must still be completed by a nurse.
If you don’t know how to answer a question you can always select the ‘don’t know’ button.
If you closed EmergConnect but did not clear it from your recent apps you can simply reopen it and find your predicted wait time there.
If you cleared EmergConnect from your recent apps you will no longer be able to access your wait time prediction. However, your information will be available for nurses during triage. EmergConnect will not allow you to re-enter your information.
If you entered incorrect information into EmergConnect by accident you can inform your triage nurse during triage to correct it during triage.

Selecting My Hospital

When using EmergConnect you will be prompted to select the hospital at which you would like to or are currently seeking care.
If you can’t find a certain hospital, they may not be using EmergConnect yet.

EmergConnect Registration

EmergConnect will ask you to enter: First Name, Last Name, Phone Number, Address, Postal Code, Province, Date of Birth, Email Address, Emergency Contact (Optional), Emergency Contract Phone (Optional), Family Physician (Optional).
In order to verify your identify and registration information, EmergConnect will ask you your Ontario Health Card Number and Version Code.
Check that you have input the correct OHIP number, Name and Date of Birth. Ensure that you have not already used EmergConnect for your visit. If you have already used EmergConnect and are trying to complete it twice it will not allow you to enter your information twice.
If you don’t have a valid Ontario Health Card (OHIP) number you will not be able to use EmergConnect. We are actively working to expand our offering to make EmergConnect available to more users.
EmergConnect is currently not available for users under the age of 18. We are actively working to expand our offering to make EmergConnect available to more users.

Reason for Visit

To find the reason for your visit you can use search for your visit reason, which will open relevant categories with reasons for visit for you to choose from. You select your reason for visit by checking the appropriate check-box. If you can’t find your reason for visit you can enter a custom reason for visit by selecting ‘I can’t find the reason for my visit’.
If you can’t find your reason for visit you can enter a custom reason for visit by selecting ‘I can’t find the reason for my visit’.
If you have multiple reasons for visiting you can select as many reasons for visiting as necessary.
When prompted in EmergConnect, you select your pain level from 1 to 10 by selecting the box with the associated number for your level of pain.
If you are not in pain, you can select ‘no pain’ in EmergConnect.

General Questions

EmergConnect asks for your sex assigned at birth as this is important information for hospital staff to know.
EmergConnect asks your identified information as this is important information for hospital staff to know.
If you can’t find your identified gender you can select ‘other’ which will open a free-text box in which you can enter your identified gender.
If you can’t find your pre-existing medical condition using the search feature or the list, you can enter a custom pre-existing medical condition by selecting the ‘I can’t find my condition’ button.
If you can’t find your allergy using the search feature or the list, you can enter a custom allergy by selecting the ‘I can’t find my allergy’ button.
If you can’t find your medication using the search feature or the list, you can enter a custom medication by selecting the ‘I can’t find my medication’ button.
This gives you the opportunity to enter any additional information that you would like to share with the hospital staff prior to seeing them.

Wait Time

EmergConnect uses machine learning to calculate your individualized wait time prediction based on when and why you are seeking care.
If your wait time has elapsed and you have not been seen yet. DO NOT ask clinicians about how long you are going to wait. Wait to be called.
DO NOT ask clinicians about your wait time in EmergConnect. Simply let the wait time in EmergConnect elapse or clear it from your recently used apps.
Predicted wait times are approximate. The emergency department is an unpredictable environment. Please allow time between predicted wait time elapsing and being seen by a physician. EmergConnect is a third party application not developed by the care partner at which you are seeking care.

Updating Information

You can update your information if your condition or reason for visit has changed by selecting the ‘Update reason for visit’ button on the wait time screen.
If you are prompted to update your reason for visit, please answer the questions asked in EmergConnect.

Cancelling your visit

You can cancel you visit by selecting ‘cancel visit’ in the wait time screen in EmergConnect.

Navigating EmergConnect

You navigate EmergConnect by answering the questions presented to you or by using the back button if you wish to change an answer.
You can navigate back and change an answer in EmergConnect by selecting the back button.
You may not be able to navigate back to certain pages in EmergConnect. This is designed for safety and data integrity purposes.
You may not be allowed to skip certain questions. If you do not know the answer to a quick you can select the ‘Don’t know’ button. If you feel uncomfortable answering certain questions you can discontinue use of EmergConnect at any point in time and it will not affect your care.

Privacy and Security

At EmergConnect your safety and privacy are our number one priority. EmergConnect is fully PHIPA, HIPAA, and PIPEDA compliant. EmergConnect ensures your privacy and security through dozens of privacy and security features that ensure your data is safe. Prior to launch EmergConnect underwent a full privacy impact assessment, threat and risk assessment, and extensive penetration testing. Disclaimer: Just like online shopping, email, or virtual care, using EmergConnect has some inherent privacy and security risks that your health information may be intercepted or unintentionally disclosed.
EmergConnect only ever uses your data to predict your wait time and complete online triage and registration.
No. EmergConnect never sells or uses your data without your consent.
